Construction begins on wastewater lift
stations in Pharr, Texas
Pharr, Texas – Ground was broken today on works included in the
Wastewater Collection System Improvements project of the city of Pharr, Texas, which is being partially funded with
grants and loans totaling $35
million from the North American Development Bank (NADB).
NADB Managing Director Jorge C. Garcés
and Mayor Leopoldo “Leo” Palacios presided over the groundbreaking
ceremony for the $44 million project
aimed at rehabilitating outdated infrastructure and meeting the
demand of a rapidly growing population.
The Bank is financing about 75 percent of the project
costs through a $16 million, low-interest loan, which will be made in
the form of revenue bonds, and a US$19 million grant from its Border
Environment Infrastructure Fund (BEIF), which is funded by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
“As a result of the Bank’s support of
this wastewater improvement project, more than 54,000 people living in
Pharr will be able to enjoy a better quality of
life, in keeping with current demand,” commented Mr. Garcés.
The
project includes construction of three new lift stations, the
decommissioning of nine existing lift stations, and the installation of
gravity sewer lines and force mains in the northern, central and
southern areas of the city.
To
date, NADB is participating in a total of 117 projects along the
U.S.-Mexico border with more than US$945.5 million in grants and loans.
