Paving of 100 streets in 30 subdivisions
begins in Nogales, Sonora. Nogales, Sonora - Construction began today for the Comprehensive
Paving and Air Quality Program of Nogales, Sonora. The goal of this
program is to pave 300,000 square meters of streets in 30 subdivisions
in this border town. Nogales Mayor Marco Antonio Martínez Dabdoub and Héctor Camacho, Deputy Managing Director of the North American Development Bank (NADB), presided over the groundbreaking ceremony, waving a flag to signal start up of the paving works to be funded with the proceeds of a loan from NADB. The entire project represents an estimated investment of US$10.6 million, with a NADB loan for US$8.83 million covering up to 84% of the project's total cost. "With this project, NADB is providing US$34.4 million in loans and grants for four environmental projects in Nogales", stated Mr. Camacho in his remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony. "With its accelerated economic and industrial development and a population growth rate more than double the national average, Nogales needs as much support as possible to move basic infrastructure projects off the ground and keep up with current and future demand for services." The streets to be paved are located in residential areas of Nogales that already have water and wastewater services installed. Upon completion, the project is expected to reduce air pollution caused by vehicular dust in the "Cocospera" air basin shared by Nogales, Sonora and Nogales, Arizona, thus improving overall health conditions for people residing in the area. In Sonora, NADB has participated in 18 projects with financing totaling US$73.5 million: US$44.8 million in loans and US$28.7 million in grants. These projects are benefiting more than 469,000 people. Since its inception, NADB has provided more than US$947.2 million in grants and loans to help finance 118 projects along the U.S.-Mexico border. The North American Development Bank is a financial institution established and capitalized in equal parts by the |
